Lymphedema Center
Women who have been treated for breast cancer or patients who have had surgery for burns and other surgeries, which require the removal of lymph nodes, can develop lymphedema.Lymphedema is a condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid and water in the body causing painful and debilitating swelling of limbs. Lymph nodes are part of the body's lymphatic system, which drains those substances that cannot be drained and reabsorbed by the blood system. Once the lymphatic system becomes insufficient, the fluids they processed no longer have a place to go. So, instead the fluids build up in the body and cause swelling.
Dr. Wendy Davis, an Augusta surgeon, says the new clinic is a benefit for patients. "For the volume in Augusta, we need more than one clinic. This is a life quality issue. We are having more breast cancer survivors. We need to be ready to serve the needs of these patients," Davis says.
Kimberly Brabham, OTR/L, CLT, the center's Certified Lymphedema Specialist, who has 11 years experience as an occupational therapist, uses manual lymph drainage techniques, compression, exercises and meticulous skincare to help patients manage their lymphedema. "Lymphedema is not a curable disease, but it is a treatable one. My goal is to teach patients how to manage it," she says.
